Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced by splitting water by electrolysis. This produces only hydrogen and oxygen. To achieve the electrolysis we need electricity, we need power. This process to make green hydrogen is powered by renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar. That makes green hydrogen the cleanest option – hydrogen from renewable energy sources excluding C02 as a by-product. Green or renewable hydrogen – made from the electrolysis of water powered by solar or wind – is indispensable to climate neutrality. It can do three things: store surplus renewables power when the grid is unable to absorb it, assist decarbonise hard-to-electrify sectors such as long-distance transport and heavy industry, and replace fossil fuels as a zero-carbon feedstock in chemicals and fuel production.


The versatility of hydrogen as chemical storage, energy carrier, and feedstock for industrial production is compelling for politicians and business. Increased utilisation of hydrogen can substantially lower GHG emissions in hard-to-abate sectors, particularly steel and cement production, heavy-duty transportation, shipping, and aviation, assist to address uncertainties in balancing intermittent renewables, and lower air pollution in cities. While countries with abundant renewable energy resources can rapidly increase hydrogen production and even achieve a surplus, renewable resources of other countries are insufficient to fulfil projected domestic demand for low-carbon fuels and feedstocks. We are driven by the believe that once technical and economic uncertainties are resolved, our commitment to trading hydrogen internationally can address potential imbalances and benefit all.
